Tumhari Sulu: A Review

Tumhari Sulu is a 2017 Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama film written and directed by Suresh Triveni and produced by Bhushan Kumar, Tanuj Garg, Krishan Kumar, Atul Kasbekar and Shanti Sivaram Maini under the banners of T-Series and Ellipsis Entertainment. Tumhari Sulu stars Vidya Balan as the titular character, an ambitious housewife who becomes a radio jockey for a late-night relationship advice show. Manav Kaul and Neha Dhupia co-star as Sulu's husband and boss, respectively.

The film follows the life of Sulu (Vidya Balan), a middle-class housewife living in Virar with her family. She enjoys her life to the fullest with her husband Ashok (Manav Kaul) and 11-year-old son Pranav. Sulu dreams of being a working woman, but since she couldn't complete high school, she is unable to apply for white-collar jobs. Her elder twin sisters mock her, seeing Sulu as beneath them due to her education. Ashok works as a manager in a tailoring firm; a frustrating job as everyone apart from him is unreasonable and over the age of sixty. On top of that, the firm is taken over by the owner's grandson, who is extremely rude. Pranav is teased by a group of classmates who sell R-rated magazines and videos.

One day, Sulu wins a contest hosted by her favourite radio station and goes to the station to collect her prize. There, she sees a poster advertising auditions for an RJ, and feels that this is the job she is meant for. Sulu meets the boss, Maria (Neha Dhupia), who finds her extrovert nature intriguing and gives her an opportunity to audition. Sulu laughs throughout the audition but at the end, says 'Hello' in a sensual tone, which impresses Maria. Maria asks if Sulu would be able to do a call-in night show, where people would call her to talk about their problems and she agrees. Ashok is irritated at first that Sulu took up the job without discussing with him but relents out of love for his wife.

Sulu starts working as RJ Sulu for the show 'Tumhari Sulu', where she uses her charm and wit to entertain and advise her callers. She becomes an instant hit among the listeners and earns praise from Maria and her colleagues. She also gets paid well and buys gifts for her family. Ashok supports her initially but soon feels insecure and neglected as Sulu spends more time at work and less at home. He also faces trouble at his office as his boss threatens to fire him for his poor performance. Pranav gets into trouble at school as he is caught with R-rated magazines and videos that he stole from his classmates.

The film explores the challenges faced by Sulu as she tries to balance her personal and professional life. She faces criticism from her sisters and relatives who think that she is neglecting her family and ruining her reputation by doing a 'shameful' job. She also faces harassment from some of her callers who make obscene remarks or stalk her outside the station. She tries to cope with these problems with her optimism and humour but soon realizes that she has to make some tough choices.

Tumhari Sulu is a heartwarming and humorous film that celebrates the spirit of women empowerment and self-expression. Vidya Balan delivers a brilliant performance as Sulu, portraying her character with grace, charm and authenticity. She makes us laugh with her comic timing and makes us empathize with her emotions. Manav Kaul is equally impressive as Ashok, playing his role with subtlety and sensitivity. He shows us the struggles of a man who loves his wife but feels insecure and frustrated by his own situation. Neha Dhupia is also good as Maria, the confident and supportive boss who mentors Sulu. The supporting cast, including Abhishek Sharma as Pranav, Vijay Maurya as Pankaj and Malishka Mendonsa as RJ Albeli Anjali, are also effective in their roles.

The film is well-written and directed by Suresh Triveni, who makes his debut with this film. He creates a realistic and relatable story that touches upon various themes such as gender roles, family dynamics, social norms and career aspirations. He also infuses the film with humour and warmth, making it an enjoyable and uplifting watch. The film has a good pace and does not drag or bore the audience. The film also has a good soundtrack composed by various artists, including Guru Randhawa, Rajat Nagpal, Tanishk Bagchi, Amartya Bobo Rahut, LaxmikantPyarelal and Santanu Ghatak. The songs are catchy and suit the mood of the film.

Tumhari Sulu is a film that will make you smile, laugh and cry. It is a film that will inspire you to follow your dreams and be yourself. It is a film that will make you appreciate the women in your life and the sacrifices they make for you. It is a film that you should not miss.
